What is Network Topology?

Network Topologies are the locations of devices that make up a network in the physical world. At the same time, these network topologies are divided into two. One is the physical side and the other is the logical side. Now let's talk about these two features.

What Is a Physical Topology?

The physical topology is the name of the topology that covers the connection types of the devices that make up the network, the cables used and the arrangement of the cables in the system, and the layout of the devices. Of course, this physical topology is divided into sections among itself. Let's take a look at these types. Common path is ring star, extended star, mesh and tree topology. Let's take a look at these topologies.

Topology Types

Common Path Topology (BUS) takes place on the ground called the backbone, which means communication backbone in Turkish. Let's imagine a data sent on your network, this data varies depending on where you want it to end up until it reaches the destination. It stops by all the devices you can think of until it reaches the place you specify. You are likely to encounter certain problems when you use this topology. If we think very simply, I can say that your network is losing performance. At first, a device on the network checks to see if the network is free when sending data. If it is empty, it sends the file and waits for the network to empty if there is a certain traffic.

Ring Topology, let's consider a ring network. In the event that a device sends data in that network, the sent data visits all devices on the network one by one until it reaches the receiving device. Data on the network is sent with a grid called a token. The size of this token is 3 bytes maximum. This token is constantly circulating on the network and takes the data it receives from the sender to where it needs to go. Now, when we make logic, when one of the rings breaks, the whole system breaks down. The biggest problem this gives is that if a device breaks down or malfunctions, it means the whole system crashes.

Star Topology is undoubtedly the most well-known and most used type of topology. I would like to explain how this system works by giving an example. Now imagine you are 3 friends. You, Ahmet and Ceren. Now you don't talk to Ceren because you get offended with her. But you have to say something important. That's why you go and say what you want to say to Ahmet, and he says this to Cerene. Here, you are the sender Ceren and the receiver Ahmet is in the Switch state. But the thing to note here is that when there is a problem with the devices, it does not affect the network. However, when there is a problem with the Switch, the whole network converges.
