What is IP address and Why is it important?
IP address is a numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. Every computer must have an IP address to connect the Internet. Although domain names are used on the Internet, computers translate these names into IP addresses for communication. If we look at the Internet as cyber world, we can say that IP is the number that addresses us in the cyber world. In other words, computers' IP addresses are just like people's identification numbers. The most important distinguishing feature that defines us in the cyber world is our IP addresses. Unlike our addresses in the real world, our IP addresses are our identity in the cyber world.The reason for this is that IP addresses are used in every transaction performed in the cyber world, the owner of the IP address is responsible all kinds of transactions. IP addresses are distributed according to a specific system and distributed IP addresses are forwarded by backbone routers. Therefore, unfortunately we can't use the IP address we want. To whom or which institution an IP address belongs to can be determined by inquiries to be made over RIRs. These queries are called "whois". Generally, IP addresses are given to institutions and someone in the institution is responsible for purchasing the IP address, the addresses that appear in whois inquiries are usually given to be reached when there is a problem or request regarding IP addresses. The whois query will reveal which institution an IP address belongs to. Using the corporate information here, the real owner of the IP address can be found. Internet service providers are obliged to keep the access information (log records) of all users they provide internet service as per Law No. 5651.
