What is Reverse Psychology?

Reverse psychology is a strategy to get what you want by demanding what you don’t want. Scientists call it strategic self-compatibility.

The term also acknowledges that reverse psychology is a strategy. Rather than pass on your wishes directly, you hide them and instead you ask the reverse what you want. When you use reverse psychology, you use words that indicate what someone should do, even if you want them to do the opposite.

What is Reactance?

Reactance is a psychological term that refers to the uncomfortable feeling you get when you feel your freedom is under threat. Reaction, the natural response is to do the opposite of what is demanded.

If you have freedom in the past and it has suddenly disappeared, you will most likely experience backlash. For example, if a parent tells the child that they aren’t allowed to play after school, the child may feel an intense reaction. When that happens the child will try to find a way to play them, despite his mother’s wish.

Reactance is central to reverse psychology. The aim of the strategy is to make someone feel that sense of reaction, so push back against the demands you specify. If you have requested hat you don’t want, they will probably achieve it by doing what you want.

Examples of Reverse Psychology

Almost everyone has a story of how someone uses or uses reverse psychology on them. They may not able to use the term “Reverse psychology” but its meaning is clear. The scientists also studied reverse psychology and found several ways it could be used. It is used quite consciously in sales and marketing.

Reverse Psychology In Sales

Several well-known sales techniques are based on reverse psychology. One is the Face in Door technique. This technique begins hen the salesperson makes an excessive sales speech. At this point, the consumer may feel under pressure to make this big sale. However, this is usually not the sale the salesperson wants to make. Instead, to withdraw the potential consumer, he is trying to encourage consumers to offer a smaller offering, which is likely to react less and feel more comfortable.

Reverse Psychology In Marketing

The reverse psychology in marketing is gaining popularity among high-end stores. The store has no outdoor signs. Even a prestigious Prada (clothing) store, there is nothing indicates that it is a store. This creates the illusion that it isn’t just trying to sell to anyone walking down street..

You need to know it’s there or you might miss it. This increases the mystical feeling and the sense of privilege. Consumers who feel uncomfortable about being excluded visit the store and they will be more likely to purchase.

Reverse Psychology In Parenting

Parenting is undoubtedly the hardest job on the planet. As a parent, you need to find ways to influence your child’s behaviour without hindering their ability to mature into independent adults. Often, a child’s idea of what is right can conflict with their own interests. When that happens, there can be a struggle between parent and child.

One way some parents resolve this challenge is to use reverse psychology to encourage the child to choose what’s best for them. One example is that child doesn’t want to eat healthy food. The parent demand that they eat carrots, but the child may react when being forced to do something they don’t want to do. However, the parents tells them that carrots in the fridge are for parents and if the children can’t eat them, the child can eat them gladly and won’t react in any way.

Reverse Psychology In Teaching

Teachers often use reverse psychology to engage their students in difficult subjects. This can have very positive consequences if used correctly. For example, a teacher who wants his students to read a difficult book they don’t want to read, he may have better lcuk by implying that the book is too difficult for his students. To prove their teacher wrong, students can find and read this book. However, very few would do so if the teacher suggested that they should just read.

Reverse Psychology In Relationships

Reverse psychology in relationships can be a problem. It can turn out to be a manipulative way to get hat you want at your partner’s expense. Here’s an example; suppose you want your partner to go to the shop for you. Then, instead of asking them directly, you tell them they probably can’t handle the traffic. If they believe he feels that way, hey can only do so to prove him wrong.

There are several issues in this scenario. First, if you use this strategy often, your partner may start to lose faith in your words and if they believe you are trying to manipulate them they might get angry. Alternatively, using reverse psychology in relationships can backfire. Instead of fighting, they can believe what you say. They can stop driving in traffic and eventually become dependent on you for all their transportation.

Does Reverse Psychology Work?

Reverse psychology might work. In fact, two studies, the researchers concluded that in some cases reverse psychology can achieve its purpose. In other cases, however, reverse psychology doesn’t work. Many factors into play for the study of reverse psychology; the target person must believe the trick. Before they react, they should think that you want them to do something by doing the opposite. They should also not be aware that you are using reverse psychology. Finally, some people are more sensitive to reverse psychology.

Which People Fall Into “Reverse Psychology”?

People with a relaxed personality don’t fall for reverse psychology. This is because they are less like to feel reactance. So who reacts and reacts by doing the opposite of what is demanded? Typically, people who are angry, stubborn or overly emotional are more likely to be persuaded by reverse psychology.

Moreover, because children’s cognitive development is less advanced than adults, they may not find clues that someone is using reverse psychology on them. Young people may have cognitive ability, but because they are so focused on asserting their independence, their reactions can be so strong that they are still doing the opposite of what is demanded.
