How is Fiction Done? Rules of Film Montage

kurgu-montaj-2.jpg

Let’s briefly define the definition of fiction before we touch upon “Rules of fiction, how to make a movie montage?” these topics. Fiction (film edits) is one of the most important cinematographic elements, even the first forms, shapes and perhaps saves. Cinematography; shooting techniques, use of light, camera movements as well as film montage is a fact. Editing the most important part of the Post production phase, is a process of selecting – roughly – incoming raw images, cutting and adding them in succession.

The initial answer we can give to how to edit; the simplest basic fiction we can do is cut. Cutting out one plan and link it to another... The plans you cut and link together create the scene, the sequence of scenes, all of which form a film. According to these 3 sentences, it may sound too easy to make movie montage.

In fact, in every creative sector, as in the branch, flexing or even breaking the rules and rules in the film industry can make the resulting work “more creative”. However, before all this knowing how fiction is made, knowing its rules, how to cut plans, where to jump from where to where, and knowing rather than instinct carries us much further in this field.

For this reason, let’s talk about how fiction is done first. In the digital world, let’s talk about the programs we use when assembling. Let’s see the rules and requirements of fiction, what a good movie montage means.

Which Fiction Program Should I Use?

Film Montage

In the digital word, montage is much simpler and faster than the old school montage, such as the assembly of reel films and the editing of negatives. Besides, what you can do in the post-production process is almost limitless. Let’s talk about programs that you can use without getting into visual effects, color correction, combining (compositing), animation.

There are 3-4 commonly used software available on the market for video montage. The most preferred of those:

Adobe Premiere

Movie Maker & iMovie

First of all, it doesn’t matter what program you are using, what matters is your perspective, your creative side, your skills and your experience. What is essential when editing a film, which plan will come after which plan, can I give the feeling that the scene wants to give? to overcome such problems and after a while to feel that these questions stop being problems and put you into a creative process.

Avid is the most preferred program in the series, cinema, advertising industry, Final Cut Pro, the video preferred by short film editors, short film, which makes production into today’s world of fast consumption, Edius, which has become frequently used in the media sector, Premiere, a program that is indispensable from Adobe and used by some more classical digital editors and Movie Maker and iMovie, which are used by beginners to research how to fiction and how to edit.

No matter what editing program you use, installation work to get used to that interface, know the shortcuts and it requires you to use the program fast and fluently. You need to use continuously to use fast enough. But if you don’t have a time limit, learn to use each program roughly, it’s no very easy with videos or redirects that you can find on the internet. (“how to “ video’s breakthrough in the digital world)

Note

Learning a editing program isn’t about knowing every function of it and using every function skillfully. You just have to learn enough to “Master” what you can do and what you need to use frequently.

Basic Rules of Film Fiction

Although film montage may seem subjective, there are some rules or sine qua non that have been followed for years and if followed, become standardized in terms of the feeling it gives to the audience. It would be more useful if you considered these assembly rules as assimilating video fiction rather than destroying creativity.

If you search the rules of the Movie Edit, you may encounter different articles, phrases, subjective additions. I will try to simplify them and write down the necessary ones. For this, let’s talk about the 6 rules of the “rule of six” montage, which Oscar Murch, the Oscar- winning film editor, also mentioned In the blink of an eye: A perspective on film editing:

1. Emotion

The cuts you make in the video – film or let’s put it this way: how does the audience feel when you cut the plan and move on another plan? Remember, fiction directly affects the emotion the film creates in the audience. The focus of the film is the audience, not you, or the director, or your artistic point of view. At this point, it is your first responsibility to be clean and to make the audience feel the desired emotion.

2. Story

Does the fiction you make, the scene or the film make it move forward in the story line? Every time you change or cut the plan, does that make the film, the story move forward? So your cuts make sense? “How does this story progress when you cut one plan and move on to another?” this is one of the questions you need to ask.

3. Rhythm

One of the most important issues in montage is plan time. Rhythm is very important in music as well as in fiction. The length of the plans depends on the emotion you want to give, the shooting technique and audience-oriented thinking. Most editors think “prefer to keep a plan short rather than long” however, this length may be a relative preference for some films (especially art films, heavy festival films, ********aries etc.).

4. Eye Trace

This title, though somewhat confusing, refers to cutting one plan within the viewer’s angle of view and moving on to the next. Does your cut provide continuity within the movement and space in the eyes of the viewer? The movement of the player provides continuity in the eyes of the viewer as space and action.

5. 2-Dimensional Structure of the Screen

When assembling, the 180 degree rule must be followed. I mean, you can’t skip the axle when you change plans. The audience is watching the action from one side of the players and should not be watching it from the other side when you cut it. If you don’t know the 180 degree rule, you can click on this link.

6. 3-Dimensional Structure of the Action

You can break the 180 degree rule, sometimes to steer the audience differently, to confuse, to play with their perceptions. This is an exceptional case. The 3-dimensional structure of the action also describes how to express the action to the viewer within the camera movement.

We have seen how important fiction is in the emotion the film should give in the progress of the story and in communication with the audience. We looked for answers to the rules of fiction or how it should be done. The montage is perhaps the most crucial part of the film. Finally, to get inside the director’s head, to be able to tell what he wants to tell and being able to picture it in your head makes you a good editor.
