What is Port?

The word Port is frequently used among computer terms. You often hear word port but you don’t have any idea what the port means or what it works, in this article will try to explain.

When we look at the Turkish equivalent of the word, we see that it is “harbor”. So what does the term Port cover in the computer world? If we know what harbors do, you’ll see that their ports do the same job. Harbors are the places where ships load and unload and ports are the places where they take data and carry data. Just like ships that drop and load into a port. It receives specific information in ports and takes it to the required l0cation.

To explain technically after this entrance, it is possible to say cable input in its simplest form. Information exchange between external units and computers is provided by devices called ports. As an example, the external unit is the unit that provides information exchange from tools such as keyboard, mouse, printer.

How Does Port Works?

It connects to the computer and communicates with it through ports specially designed for external units. Ports mean cable input for the hardware, but not connected to electricity, but connected to the computer cable inputs.

In the world of software, the concept of port is different; In the same way, it receives information from a certain port and takes it to a certain port. But in the software world, port isn’t a physical connection, it is a logical connection. Ports such as pop3 (110th port) (Post Office Protocol Ver3) and www-http (80th port) (World Wide Web) which are not hardware but software, are a separate issue related to the software we currently processing.

Port Types
Serial Port: There are two types of 9 and 25 pins. It can only send one bit to the computer at a time. Nowadays, it has begun to leave its place to the PS/2 and USB ports, which is faster but the devices that can be connected to the serial port are still in use because they are available in our homes and can’t throw them away. Devices such as a mouse and modem can be connected to this port. It is slow but stable, which means it is solid and clean data path. Cables up to 10 meters long can be used for serial connection.

Parallel Port: Although it is fast compared to the serial port, it can’t provide the same stability. It is often a port used for printer connection. This connection point is also called LPT (LinePrinTer). One pin of this port can send 8 bits of data at a time. Uses port DB25. The number 25 in the name of DB25 refers to the number of pins in the cable input.

The printer and scanner use this port. Nowadays, parallel port has started to be replaced by USB like serial port. In order to a**** the problems that may arise, cables that exceed 5 meters in length shouldn’t be used. The target device can’t only process commands sent by the PC, but also send data to the PC itself.

PS/2 Ports: They are used for keyboard and mouse. The cable inputs are different colors for the mouse and keyboard. Hardware inputs to these include different colors thus confusion is prevented. PS/2 ports are developed by IBM. Some new motherboards don’t support PS/2 instead they are using USB.

SCSI Port (Small Computer System Interface): The function of the SCSI port can be summarized as connecting a large number of devices a row to the computer. The maximum number is 15. It supports hard drives, CD-ROM devices and other peripherals. SCSI doesn’t have default on the motherboard. This requires an extra SCSI card. Cable length shouldn’t exceed 3 meters.

RJ-11 Port (Telephone Line Port): This is the port you use for the modem. There are 6 pin cables inside. Modem cables can reach 50 meters long.

USB Port: It is a type of connection that can be used for almost any device. It is a connection standard that provides very fast data transfer.

It can transfer data at 480MBps (57 Megabytes per second) and 127 devices can be connected from a single port. USB 2.0 was developed by various major companies in 2001. USB 2.0 is compatible with other older USB versions. 4 thin lines pass through the USB cable. These provides power to receive and transmit data and generate signals. The length of the USB cable can be up to 5 meters.

IEEE 1394 Firewire Port: The IEEE 1394 port is a connection standart capable of fast data transfer. It is still popular today on laptops and digital cameras.

Game Port: The fourth port on the sound card belongs to the game port. Game controls such as joystick, gamepad and steering wheel can be connected here. The length of the cable shouldn’t exceed 5 meters.

VGA Port: Each computer has a VGA port. The VGA cable has 15-pin ends at each end that are suitable for PC and monitor connections. The cable length shouldn’t exceed three meters in order not to decrease the picture quality.
