Reverse engineering is most used method nowadays. Especially, it is using while copying current commercial products in far east. For example; our smart phones copying is work of reverse engineering. It isn't ethic. But reverse engineering is a big part of technological advance (except brand and licence).

Nowadays, it is using while scanning person for producing stuntman masks. For example; a face of person is transfering to computer with scanning method. After then they are producting easily with 3D printers.
Also, you can transfer your all wares to information technology environment with 3D scanning, and especially object scanning. By this means, you can product same wares.
